The Caffeinated Sketchbook
Welcome to Draw Tip Tuesday!
In today's video, I'm sharing a fun and creative technique inspired by my friend Cynthia Morris that brings together two of my favorite things: coffee and drawing!
I'll demonstrate several techniques on how to break the curse of the blank page using coffee stains as a fun artistic tool. Whether you're in a cozy café or on a peaceful camping trip, learn how to turn your morning cup of coffee into an art material for your sketchbook practice.
I also have an exciting announcement! Cynthia and I are leading the "Capture the Lisbon Wow" workshop again in April 2025. After an incredible experience this year, we're thrilled to invite you to join us in Lisbon for a lif...

Welcome to Draw Tip Tuesday! This week, I'm excited to share a special "side sketchbook" I used on my trip to Switzerland. Of course I brought the daily sketchbook I was working in then, but it's a bit heavy. Since I was traveling and hiking, I needed something light and portable, so I brought along my Hannemühle Zigzag Book. This accordion-style sketchbook was perfect along with some simple to...

Welcome to Draw Tip Tuesday! In today's video, I’m addressing a frequently asked question: "How long does it take to make a drawing?" Whether my artwork takes hours or just a few minutes, I'll share insights and examples from my drawing archive, as well as the time it took to create each piece. One common and stubborn misconception is that you need hours and a perfectly set-up workspace to crea...

Welcome to Draw Tip Tuesday! Today, I'd like to talk about a special drawing ritual I follow whenever I start a new sketchbook: drawing my hands as they draw! In this video, I'll walk you through my process using a Fabriano Venezia sketchbook, a Sailor fountain pen with a fude nib, waterco...

I do this too! I order a short espresso which is very strong and use it as paint with my brush to fill in, splatter and do rings. I like sketching in coffee shops so do it often. Our local Urban Sketchers Cincinnati group even has a group sketch once a month in a different coffee shop location, along with a special stamp URbean Sketchers for the occasion.

Didn't look great at first, but then it really came together in the end! I love and envy your minimal use of color. I try to apply it to my sketches as well, but it doesn't come naturally. I'm sure I would have colored more and more areas, and would not have achieved the minimalistic and simply results that you did. I hope to get better at that. Great video!

If you have a sense of where you want your focus to be in your drawing, that can help to decide (and minimise) on color.

One of your BEST videos, Koosje. So encouraging to see your self doubt, so familiar to all of us... I actually liked your end result very much. Over the years, I learned that I can "fix" almost anything, and in the end it always looks at-least-ok. A friend of mine said that "if you don't love it, it means you're not done with it yet."... That works for me in general. Of course, it's important to not over-work it either.

The QuickStix, I picked up at the kid's section in some store years ago. But you'll find them (and/or different brands but similar) online if you look for "gouache sticks" or "tempera sticks" Seawhite of Brighton sketchbooks I buy in an art supply shop in the Netherlands. It is a brand from the UK so I would imagine you should be able to find suppliers in the UK. And online. I do teach workshops in the Netherlands now and then. None are scheduled currently. Interesting idea regarding carrying a sketch book just for a particular trip. I still would carry my A-5 wherever I go in that I use it as a diary of sorts.
